You’ve certainly heard her hits “The Closest Thing To Crazy” or “Nine Million Bicycles”. If you’re already a fan of Katie Melua you probably know that she’s also famous around the world for her social and environmental engagement.
But Katie Melua wants to make the world a better place in her own way: she uses the power of emotions. Her singing has already helped her to draw attention to issues such as helping poor children, protecting forests and oceans or fighting against AIDS.
We feel inspired by her work and attitude and that’s why we’ve made her our Brand Ambassador. As well as inspiration, she gives a public face to our environmental commitment. As our green Brand Ambassador she will help to communicate our views on sustainable issues and social responsibility.
Opel will sponsor Katie Melua’s European Tour “The House” in 2010. And we will support her “European School Music Project”. This initiative will sponsor and provide music instruments for school bands in the cities of her European tour.
Georgian-born British singer Katie Melua is one of the most exceptional singers of our time. With her wonderful ballads combining jazz, blues and pop, she has sung her way into the hearts of millions.
The Katie Melua story
When Katie Melua signed with Mike Batt's Dramatico Records in September 2002, no-one could have imagined that by the release of her third album she would be the biggest-selling UK-based, female artist in the world that year.
It all started almost accidentally, with 'The Closest Thing To Crazy', when Katie saw the song’s lyrics by chance and insisted on singing them. Her instincts were right. The radio audience response was overwhelming. “People were so passionate,” said Katie. “Particularly about 'The Closest Thing To Crazy'. Someone said when it came on the radio, they had to stop the car. Someone else said they started crying.”
Her first two albums, 'Call Off The Search' and 'Piece By Piece' both became international number ones, and the story was to continue, after an exciting, record-breaking rollercoaster ride involving several massive world tours and many special moments – like Katie playing on stage for Nelson Mandela with her idols, Queen, or dining at Buckingham Palace with the real Queen and the American Ambassador.
Her latest album, entitled 'The House', was released in May 2010 has been described as sonically epic, adventurous and dramatic and, whilst appealing to Katie's fans is also drawing a new audience. ‘The House’ album has garnered some of the finest notices of her career and topped Billboard’s pan-European charts. The first single ‘The Flood’ was described by Radio 2’s Janice Long and the Daily Telegraph as “the best thing she’s ever done.”
