BlueInjection is cutting-edge SCR diesel technology from Opel that uses AdBlue®* to further reduce the level of nitrogen oxides and deliver cleaner emissions.

 

  • The innovative SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) technology: BlueInjection is a part of Opel´s exhaust gas aftertreatment system.
  • BlueInjection technology directly injects AdBlue® fluid into the exhaust system triggering a chemical reaction that reduces harmful nitrogen oxides emissions, by converting them into nitrogen and water vapour, which are harmless to the environment.
  • AdBlue® is a clean, non-toxic, non-flammable, and odourless fluid that consists purely of 32.5% urea and 67.5% water.

HOW TO ADBLUE® ?

WHEN TO REFILL?

Vehicles fitted with the BlueInjection system need regular AdBlue® top-ups between recommended service intervals. An indicator in the dashboard will inform you when levels are running low.

 

Each AdBlue® tank is equipped with sensors that trigger a series of messages when the fluid is running low.

 

Please refer to the owners manual for details.

 

Attention! If the AdBlue® tank is emptied, the system will need a full top-up before the vehicle can be restarted.

HOW TO REFILL ADBLUE® ?

Top-up the AdBlue® tank yourself using one of the AdBlue® pumps available on many garage forecourts. Alternatively use AdBlue refill bottles available.

 

  • The AdBlue® tank is located next to the diesel fuel filler.
  • The AdBlue® filler cap is coloured and is opened just like the fuel filler.
  • Top-ups are easily done using truck / commercial vehicle AdBlue® refill pumps available on many garage forecourts. Alternatively top-ups are easily done using AdBlue® containers available at many garages or other outlets.
  • If AdBlue® is spilt on the vehicle’s paintwork, wipe it off and rinse the area with water.

What is AdBlue® ?

AdBlue®  (also called Diesel Exhaust Fluid) is an  odourless ,  colourless  clean and non-toxic fluid that consists purely of  32.5% urea and 67.5% water.
As AdBlue ®  is mostly water, it freezes at -11°C (a 32.5% concentration is the lowest freezing point of a  urea water  solution), all AdBlue ®  tanks are equipped with a heater to automatically melt any solution that has frozen.

What is the SCR technology?

SCR means Selective Catalytic Reduction and is a technology used for  reducing nitrogen oxides  (NO x ) from the exhaust gas of diesel engines. It is based on AdBlue ®  (also called Diesel Exhaust Fluid), a  32.5% urea solution in purified water,  which is injected into the exhaust pipe. The urea in the AdBlue® releases ammonia (NH 3 ) with the exhaust gas high temperatures and this ammonia reacts with nitrogen oxides (NO and NO 2 ) in the catalytic converter to form harmless nitrogen (N 2 ) and water (H 2 O) vapor.

Are there alternatives to SCR technologies?

SCR technologies  are the latest  state of the art technology  towards future emission requirements. It is the reason why Opel decided to implement BlueInjection (Opel's SCR technology) to the  entire diesel fleet  starting as of 2018.

What happens if I don´t top-up?

If the AdBlue ®  tank is empty, the car will not restart once the ignition is turned off! This is not a fault, but a  legally required feature of the system . If this happens the system will need a  full top-up  before the vehicle can be restarted.

What should I pay attention to when buying AdBlue® ?

  • First  check for the AdBlue® trademark and for the ISO 22241-1 and DIN 70070 standards.
  • We strongly advise you to only use bottles or containers with a nozzle suitable for the filler pipe (usually a screwed adapter). This will minimise the risk of spillage.
  • Finally  since AdBlue® has a limited lifespan, check the date of expiry before refilling.

Since AdBlue®  is already used in commercial vehicles, can AdBlue® be refilled at truck filling stations?

Yes. You can refill at the AdBlue ® pumps that exist in many fuel stops for commercial vehicles.

What should I do if I spill AdBlue® onto my car and/or clothes?

If  AdBlue®  come into contact with the vehicle’s paintwork, wipe it off and  rinse the area with water.
If you ever spill AdBlue ®  on your clothes and/or hands, just rinse thoroughly with clear water.

Is there an option to have a bigger AdBlue®  tank?

Opel vehicles do not have this option. There is only one tank size for each individual vehicle - each specifically designed to meet design and weight restrictions.

Who manufactures AdBlue® ?

AdBlue ®  is a  registered trademark of the VDA  (German Association of the Automotive Industry). Only licensed manufacturers and distributors may use the name 'AdBlue ® '.
